Training 

• Resident doctors are part of a graduate medical education (GME) program

• Their training program is also known as a residency

• Residencies can last three to seven years

• Junior residents have more supervision and simpler responsibilities

• Residents' responsibilities grow as they gain experience

• First-year residents are often called interns
